Flow Characteristics at a River Diversion Juncture and Implications for Juvenile Salmon Entrainment

چکیده
Flow structures at a river diversion juncture are complex and have been studied extensively. Their impact on the juvenile salmon entrainment into side channel, however, is less investigated, based mostly empiricism. In this study, Eulerian fish tracking model developed used in conjunction with 3D flow solver to quantitatively evaluate implications of characteristics typical junctures entrainment. First, validated available experimental data, key examined using results, their for discussed. Next, numerical show that cross-sectional distribution immediately upstream an important factor controls efficiency. Fish efficiency curves different ratios patterns shed light reasons behind some field-observed patterns. Further, secondary bend may significant junctures, agreement field observations. Finally, submerged vane demonstrated be potential management option locally generate flows achieve desired property.

Interactive effects of water diversion and climate change for juvenile chinook salmon in the lemhi river basin (USA.).
The combined effects of water diversion and climate change are a major conservation challenge for freshwater ecosystems. In the Lemhi Basin, Idaho (U.S.A.), water diversion causes changes in streamflow, and climate change will further affect streamflow and temperature. Shifts in streamflow and temperature regimes can affect juvenile salmon growth, movement, and survival. We examined the potenti...
متن کاملJuvenile Salmon Usage of the Skeena River Estuary
Migratory salmon transit estuary habitats on their way out to the ocean but this phase of their life cycle is more poorly understood than other phases. The estuaries of large river systems in particular may support many populations and several species of salmon that originate from throughout the upstream river. The Skeena River of British Columbia, Canada, is a large river system with high salm...

15 صفحه اولControls on the Entrainment of Juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) into Large Water Diversions and Estimates of Population-Level Loss
Diversion of freshwater can cause significant changes in hydrologic dynamics and this can have negative consequences for fish populations. Additionally, fishes can be directly entrained into diversion infrastructure (e.g. canals, reservoirs, pumps) where they may become lost to the population. However, the effect of diversion losses on fish population dynamics remains unclear. We used 15 years ...

The Nueces River is the primary source of freshwater inflow to Corpus Christi Bay and virtually the only source of freshwater inflow to the Nueces Delta. In association with reservoir development and operation within the Nueces Basin, the magnitude of freshwater inflow has been greatly reduced since 1958. Continually increasing salt concentrations in the soil and water have compromised the func...
